Meyers' New "Pocket Rocket". Who the hell were those guys, and why did Maddie Ross call the seated one "trash? I am confuse. Was it because he didn't stand? Was it because he never went to jail for the James Gang's crimes?

Historically was Cole Younger more of a sympathetic person than Frank James? I'm going to have to read the book to see what Portis says. It was rude of him not to stand, but she didn't have to be so nasty.

Just another reminder why she never had a significant other. Not having a husband was her choice - she was landed and quite capable.

Nonetheless, many men of the wild west would have seen her strength, abilities and character as a huge asset. I doubt Mattie could have cared less if a man stood for her or not, that's her nature. In my view she knew exactly who who he was and that's the reason for her comment. Here's the deal with the ending. In the book, Mattie Ross went to either see Rooster at this wild west show or go pick up his body I don't remember which.

The Coens achieve both with some of the names that are mentioned in the film. The name "Judge Parker" is mentioned a few times and it is in reference to a real-life judge known as Hanging Judge Parker for his harsh sentencing. Another name mentioned is J.

Todd Anderson which is one of Tom Chaney's aliases and is also the name of the Coens' frequent storyboard artist. Though a relatively small cast, the Coens do manage to include some very notable characters, some of which don't even appear on-screen. In one instance, Mattie gets a letter from her family's attorney warning her of her headstrong actions.

The voice of the unseen lawyer is that of Oscar winner J. This voice cameo was likely just done as a favor to the Coens as Simmons had previously worked with the brothers in the comedies The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading.

In the film's epilogue, an adult Mattie Ross is seen responding to a letter from Rooster asking if she would like to meet when he is passing by as part of a traveling show. When Mattie goes to see her own adventure buddy, she learns he passed away. While there, she meets with Cole Younger and Frank James who are also part of the show.

Both men are real-life figures who were part of the infamous James-Younger Gang and Frank was the older brother of Jesse James. The also traveled in similar shows such as is shown in the film.
